UKRAINE: Dauntless and Indomitable ... the Oskil River Remains Ukrainian, Holding Back the Russians [1]

"It's a physical barrier that has military utility, but it's almost a psychological barrier now too … If the Russians get over the Oskil that means things are really bad" said Mick Ryan, a retired major general from the Australian army and analyst of the war. www.france24.com/...

In their February 2022 onslaught against Ukraine, the Russians quickly swept over the right banks, crossed the bridges on the Oskil river and captured the key logistical railhead city of Kupiansk in northeastern Kharkiv oblast.

Kossacks might remember that after the Ukrainians withstood the initial force of the Russian invasion and started to push back, recapturing Kupiansk and ending its use as a major logistical hub for the Russians in supplying their infamous “Izyum Salient”, the garrison at Lyman and to even make their ill-fated attempts to capture kos’ favorite hero village of Dovhenke, was a subject of daily discussion and numerous diaries by both kos and Mark Sumner. Fighting their way to and capturing Kupiansk from the Russians seemed like a tantalizing fruit which was so close yet so well guarded and so far out of reach.

Then came the General Srskyi-led Ukrainian “Thunder Run” counteroffensive of September 2022 which sent the Russians skedaddling from large swaths of Kharkiv oblast, parts of Donetsk oblast and into Luhansk oblast. Kupiansk, the Oskil river and its reservoir returned to Ukrainian control. And have been that way since. And boy o boy don’t think the Russians have not tried to again cross the Oskil, take Kupiansk and in the process hope to open a new front in their battle for Donetsk … Izyum Salient 2.0?

The Russians have been relentless and have not spared any mother’s son from the regular “meat assaults”, often backed by mechanized infantry to overcome the Ukrainian garrison on the banks of the Oskil, cross over and establish a bridgehead. Ukraine has repulsed every one of those attempts including even the one in which the Russians temporarily succeeded by camouflaging themselves in Ukrainian uniforms and livery. It didn’t work. And the beat goes on:

Ukraine prevents Russia from establishing bridgehead west of Oskil River, military says Ukrainian troops managed to fend off Russian forces attempting to establish a foothold on the western side of the Oskil River north of the Kharkiv Oblast town of Kupiansk, the General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces reported on Dec. 3. kyivindependent.com/...

And this news just today:

The right bank of the Oskil in the Kharkiv region is under the control of the Defense Forces - General Staff The Ukrainian military has driven the enemy out of the bridgehead on the right bank of the Oskil River in the area of the village of Novomlyns'k in the Kharkiv region. The defense forces conducted a successful operation to clear the territory and established control over the right bank. unn.ua/...

For a while many feared that the Russian pressure against Ukraine on the Kupiansk line was going to be just as onerous as the current complicated situation in Western Donetsk. Not so. The Ukrainians are pushing the Russians back. The Oskil continues to flow unvexed(hello President Lincoln!) into its reservoir. And the critical transportation hub of Kupiansk remains Ukrainian.

SLAVA UKRAINI !!
