Street Prophets Friday: Frost (open thread/photo diary) [1]

Greetings and welcome to the first Friday of 2025. Last week I mentioned that I might just present a diary of my photos from wandering around out in the frosty countryside of the Czech Republic and, as I didn't hear any cries of "No! We'd rather see more of your summer vacation photos from Ireland!" — I shall be almost entirely avoiding shades of green for another week.

When we headed out to the country after Christmas we didn't find a single flake of snow and yet the world around us was dusted in white, delicate white frost crystals.

Some photos from around the yard:

We visited a friend of ours who lives in a town on the other side of the hill and took a walk in a local park.

The next day, Mrs the Werelynx and I hiked across the fields and up into the woods on the slopes of the big hill.

Before we went to visit friends of ours for a few hours in a village fairly nearby on New Year's Eve, Mrs the Werelynx and I stopped by a spot in the woods on the way. The spot is known as Braun's Bethlehem. Czechs call nativity scenes "Betlémy" from the name of the town where Jesus was reported to have been born. Braun was a baroque era sculptor who created a great number of large sandstone statues for Count Sporck, among them are a collection of statues carved out of the local stone along a path in the woods on the Sporck estate of Kuks.

The Stone Seat with a great view of the nativity scene— there's an open book on the right and a double depression on the left. The story is that Braun himself carved out a comfortable seat of his own from which to examine his work.

We had a nice visit with our friends and gave our apologies and said our goodbyes before 8:00 and drove back to our place through a thick fog. We had a quiet New Year's Eve, avoiding the fireworks and going to bed before 10:30. I made a few attempts to witness a display of the northern lights which was supposedly due and visible, but again— no luck. Although we had a bit of a window of stars overhead for much of the night, the northern horizon was always obscured by clouds and fog.

Thanks for stopping by.
