LATE BREAKING:

'Stunning': Legal analyst shocked that judge scheduled sentencing for Trump. www.rawstory.com/...

Judge Juan Merchan ruled against Donald Trump's motion to dismiss the guilty verdict in the New York fraud case in which Trump was found guilty on 34 counts. Trump must now return to court virtually or in person on Jan. 10. The judge also took a moment to shame Trump's attorneys, saying, "There have, however, been instances when in written submissions, counsel has come dangerously close to crossing the line of zealous representation and professional advocacy one would respect from members of the bar and officers of the court and this Court has at times, made counsel aware of its observations and concerns. Now, counsel has resorted to language, indeed rhetoric, that has no place in legal filings." ✂️ MSNBC legal analyst Lisa Rubin called the idea that Trump would end up in court again "stunning," thinking Merchan would also look for a middle ground after Trump's win and the district attorney's office indicating they were fine with such an approach. "So, the fact that he has scheduled this sentencing for January 10th is itself stunning," she said. ===

One of the ‘craziest’ Congresses ever comes to an ignominious end. www.msnbc.com/…

In case you need some background on today's shitshow. (It's still early morning here and it hasn't happened yet). The Speakership Election in the 119th Congress. mattglassman.substack.com/…

The 119th Congress officially begins at noon on Friday. For the second Congress in a row, we are faced with the prospect of a contested Speakership election at the outset of the Congress. Below are (1) some background materials on the procedures and politics of Speakership elections; and (2) an assessment of some of the political dynamics of the election and its effect on the rest of the 119th Congress.

This may be old news by the time the Shade posts, but it's still informative.

I wouldn't normally include this, as its a summary of various news stories and i prefer to give each story its own spot. But its Slim Pickens for news today and the House shitshow will the focus of it. So here's the Punchbowl summary of the day. Johnson’s jam: It’s a new Congress but the same problems. punchbowl.news/…

Legislative business starts today at 11 a.m. with the closing of the 118th Congress. The new Congress begins at noon with the quorum call and the vote to elect a speaker. And the 119th Congress will kick off with drama. Speaker Mike Johnson is facing an alarming revolt from conservative hardliners. Does this sound familiar? President-elect Donald Trump has been lobbying Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) on Johnson’s behalf, as we scooped for you on Thursday. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), a frequent Johnson critic, is backing him. But this may not be enough. Johnson has a tenuous single-digit majority, while a dozen hardliners have publicly questioned whether he deserves to remain speaker. Let’s be clear: It’s entirely possible that Johnson could lose the speakership today or this weekend, or that the balloting goes more than one round. The latest. Johnson spent Thursday making phone calls and holding meetings in his Capitol office in a bid to shore up his vote count. Johnson met with members of the House Freedom Caucus, including Roy and GOP Reps. Ralph Norman (S.C.) and Victoria Spartz (Ind.), both of whom are still publicly undecided on whether they’ll back the Louisiana Republican again.

Well, that was anticlimactic. Mike Johnson re-elected speaker as two rebel Republicans convinced to change vote. www.rawstory.com/…

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) managed to defeat a GOP rebellion and retain his position on Friday afternoon, following an initial vote in which a small group of Republicans had previously voted against him, reported Politico. Reps. Ralph Norman (R-SC) and Keith Self (R-TX) flipped their votes to back the speaker following a break, according to the report.

Of course, the question now is how long he's going to last…

LOL! Round of applause when it's announced that Matt Gaetz won't serve in this Congress

in other news:

I wonder if that means Assad too? From MSNBC. www.msnbc.com/...

* Moscow’s desperation: “Russia has ground through repeated waves of soldiers in Ukraine. It lost some of its most experienced troops at the very start of the invasion, then shipped off tens of thousands of convicts without seeming to care whether they survived. Now, still desperately seeking sufficient manpower to maintain pressure on Ukraine, Russia has expanded recruitment even more. Men (and women) no longer have to be convicted of a crime — under new laws, any suspects detained by the police are informed that pending charges will disappear if they volunteer. The military also is taking anyone with large, unpaid debts; recent immigrants caught in repeated dragnets; and even corrupt officials.”

DYK: the trump FBI holdover that refused to execute warrants on the Willard, Eastman, Clark etc in 2021 is the SAME GUY who told Congress he couldn’t find the pipe bomber b/c of “corrupt data.” Plus the guy who issued the report is the one that lied to Congress about the USSS deleted text messages

in case you were wondering (although I doubt it, you already knew it it), the man is still an as shat. 'Nobody wants to see this!' Trump vents fury over flags being half-staff for inauguration. www.rawstory.com/…

President-elect Donald Trump took to his Truth Social platform on Friday to complain that the American flag will be flown at half-staff for his inauguration due to the period of mourning for the recently deceased former President Jimmy Carter.
