Noel Smuk, I always believed the registrar of his birth was dyslexic.
'The Trump year opens with an anti-democratic, anti-European offensive led by Elon Musk'
*This is a Le Monde Opinion column as it is behind a paywall; you can read the intro paragraphs for free.
Noel’s remit is to undermine American democracy, but as always with Billionaires, his megalomania, ego, and conviction of his own geniarse drives him ever onwards, today America, tomorrow the world. Money makes the world go round; the more you have of it, the bigger the spanner you can insert into the works.
Now, some Americans may object to foreigners' complaints about Corporate Imperialism with the words “Freedom of Speech.” Noel’s “freedom” has come at some serious cost to American taxpayers. I’ll continue later, back to the opinion piece.
The first Trump administration went after Chancellor Angela Merkel. Now, Musk has taken aim at her successor, Olaf Scholz, and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, described as an "undemocratic tyrant." On Thursday, January 2, it was the turn of the British prime minister, Labour's Keir Starmer, to come under fire from the boss of X. Musk accused Starmer of having covered up a vast and sordid scandal of rapes of underage girls perpetrated by gangs of Pakistani immigrants in Great Britain.
Noel was elected by whom to his new Quango? Oh, that’s right he was annointed appointed.
There's one detail that plunges Musk observers into an abyss of perplexity: His X account once again bears the name Elon Musk, after having been renamed, for the space of a New Year's Eve, "Kekius Maximus," illustrated by an armored frog. The more erudite recognized Pepe the Frog, ex-symbol of the American far right; others wondered about the mental age of the space and electric vehicle genius; financial specialists, meanwhile, noted that the value of the cryptocurrency of the same name, Kekius Maximus, gained 60% in one hour and enabled savvy individuals to reap $2.3 million (€2.2 million) in the process.
*Elon Musk Sends Kekius Maximus Token Crashing By 99%.
Beyond the anecdote, the most revealing aspect of this campaign on X is not the denigration of Scholz or Starmer but the promotion of their political opponents. Musk openly appeals to German voters to support the far-right Alternative für Deutschland party in the February 23 parliamentary elections. In the United Kingdom, he calls for new elections and offers to fund the populist party of Nigel Farage, the Tories' rival, and defends a far-right figure imprisoned for evading justice, with the slogan "Free Tommy Robinson." ~ snip So omnipresent that he seems to have eclipsed the vice president-elect, JD Vance, is Musk acting on instructions or his own initiative? The richest man in the world hasn't left Trump's side since the election campaign, which he helped finance to the tune of a quarter-billion dollars. The suspicion of conflict of interest that this proximity raises for a company head enriched by public contracts doesn't seem to have occurred to either of them. By way of thanks, Trump has entrusted Musk with a presidential commission on government efficiency. On paper, his brief involves dismantling America's federal bureaucracy, not European democracy.
With all the social sophistication of a teenage jackass, Noel is a danger; look what I have done, heh heh.
It looks like America has elected Beavis and Butthead this time, and they are rubbing their hands together as to what they can do with Starlink.
How long will the Trump-Musk partnership last? Elected for four years, Trump recently pointed out that Musk could never be: He wasn't born in the US. A grande dame of technology journalism, Kara Swisher is even crueler: Musk "could have been the next Steve Jobs," she writes in her 2024 book Burn Book. "But he chose to be Howard Hughes," the eccentric Texas billionaire who died of dementia in 1976.
* Donnie should know there is always another schmuck ready, willing, and able to play “puppet.”
Money can buy anything, and that is the one true thing that has driven American democracy since WWII. Hell, it is even the American Dream, “If I ruled the world.”
The new American way dawns in under 3 weeks.
Brace Yourselves.
A morning muse
