Johnson Fails on First Vote for Speaker (updated) [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Date: 2025-01-03

Without a speaker, the House of Representatives essentially ceases to function, leaving one-half of Congress unable to fulfill its constitutional duties, including:

Pass Legislation No bills or resolutions can be introduced, debated, or passed in the House. Conduct Floor Votes The House cannot vote on any proposed laws, amendments, or motions. Form Committees Committees cannot be officially formed or staffed, which halts legislative work, hearings, and investigations. Conduct Oversight Investigations into government agencies, executive actions, or other oversight activities are stalled. Approve Government Funding The House cannot pass appropriations bills, putting the government at risk of a shutdown. Raise or Suspend the Debt Ceiling Without a speaker, Congress cannot address critical issues like raising the debt ceiling to prevent a financial crisis. Respond to National Crises Congress is paralyzed in responding to emergencies such as natural disasters, terrorist attacks, or economic downturns. Process Impeachments or Censures The House cannot bring forward articles of impeachment, conduct impeachment inquiries, or censure public officials. Swear in New Members Any newly elected members cannot be sworn in, leaving vacancies in representation. Engage in Foreign Affairs

The House cannot issue official statements, approve treaties, or allocate foreign aid, weakening U.S. diplomatic influence.

And, most deliciously, the longer this goes on, Congress cannot certify Trump's election (on

January 6).

It will be interesting to see what ‘deals’ Johnson makes.
