H1B Visa Issue Solved
So easy! So elegant!
I hear two arguments about H1B visas. One is that they don’t displace a single American engineer, not one. According to this view, corporations need workers for work no American is qualified to do. For instance, a new drug needs to be developed, and no American who can do the work is available to do it. The pharmaceutical company or University with a grant either hires a post doctoral foreigner or the drug doesn’t get developed. For instance, a new field of software is being developed; the coding and hardware are so cutting edge that either only the foreign elite student who has been working on this for his or her doctoral thesis gets hired or the software doesn’t get developed. It’s never any other way!
The corporatists always argue that these foreign workers are far smarter or “more motivated” than us slovenly Americans. Without them, their companies would go down the toilet, and America herself would spiral down after them. Look what has happened already. Vivek has nearly had an aneurysm, and we have caused Elon to swear! He’s threatening to leave the country. How can we live with ourselves after treating these geniuses so inhospitably?
The other understanding of H1B is that corporations need grueling, repetitive coding to be done. They could hire American engineers to do it at $70K a year, but they much prefer to hire foreign workers at $40K a year. They need/want these workers to work 16 hour days, weeks on end, and if they call these engineers “contractors” they can get them to do it without paying overtime. In other words, the “super smart foreigner” idea is a con; slave labor is the truth. American graduates are left with no job and great debt.
We can settle this once and for all by enacting a simple change to the law. I call it the “Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is” amendment. It answers the concerns of true believers and skeptics alike. Anyone hired on an H1B Visa must be payed 130 percent of what Americans currently doing that job or an equivalent job make. All hirees must be paid overtime for more than 8 hours a day, and for more than 40 hours a week. No exceptions.
A penalty of one month salary shall be levied against a company that violates these rules per day of violation, and the owners of the company shall be jailed. Complaining H1B workers shall be protected.
The program shall be administered by currently unemployed Americans with a B.S. in Computer Science after they undergo a two-month accounting program that teaches them to weed out deceit in tech companies. I guarantee that these particular Americans will be HIGHLY MOTIVATED.
Some argue that the H1B elite workers are already paid a premium because their skills are so highly sought. Good for them! Nothing will change for such men and women, now or in the future. What percentage of H1B visa hires have such a deal? —We’re about to find out.
True believers, won’t it be fun if we find out everything was on the up and up all along? Republican sadists, can you imagine how much fun it will be to see Steve Bannon and Robert Reich with egg on their faces? I call on every single one of you to support my plan immediately. Go with your gut. You too, Trump.
