The Daily Bucket. BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! Bummer New Year's Eve. Nice New Year's Day. [1]

2025. Yeah, gotta get used to writing that. How many flubbed dates on the checks will it take? For me, zero, because I write very few checks (about four a month) and I have time to think about the date.

..

It was 39of when I rolled out about ten a.m. on New Year’s morn to take a cloudy and very brisk e-bike ride all around the American Valley circuit, about ten miles total. And I was not well rested. The a-holes across the street, and I do mean directly across the street, were shooting off

REAL FRIKKIN’

LOUD

fireworks, the illegal-upon-illegal kind, meaning the kind that are not only illegal in Plumas County where I live (all fireworks of any kind are illegal here) but the kind that are illegal in California, period. Mortars. The ones that are just about as loud as a stick of dynamite.

And they started at 7:30 p.m. fer cryin’ out loud, and shot off a couple every hour or so. I went to bed about 11:40, put in ear plugs, and tried reading but dozed off. The midnight barrage started about five minutes after I got in bed and went until about 12:30 a.m.

Rant over.

I had marvelous luck on the bike ride. Very first thing, out in the field across from the high school, about one-tenth mile from my house, two Bald Eagle perched on fence posts, pretty close to each other. I’m going to assume they are a mating pair.

The fence line is about 175 yards from where I’m standing.

Closer up. The one on the right from the above photo.

The one on the left.

Closer still, back to the one on the right.

And the left.

I may not like New Year’s Eve, but I dearly love Bald Eagles first thing on New Year’s Day. I have started the year out with good portent.

As I stated, it was cold. By the time I got back home, multiple stops along the way, my hands were hurting from the cold. My gloves are fair, but they’re not real thick because they are photographer’s gloves. I’ve just gotta get those handlebar mitts.

Photographer’s gloves have index and middle finger and thumb that will open.

Not good for twenty-below, but just the ticket for most of the time when it’s chilly out.

Speaking of, maybe the birds were hunkered down to stay warm, because I wasn’t getting as much sighting as I was hoping for. However, there were numerous Steller’s Jay, Acorn Woodpecker, Pine Siskin, European Starling et. al. These Lesser Goldfinch put in some color for the day.

Lots of Red-tailed Hawk on Quincy Junction Road, as per usual.

And one Ferruginous Hawk way out in the field.

Now New Year’s Day is over, the shine is off, and it’s just another year, ain’t it? Well, heh heh, politically, of which we do not normally speak in this venue, maybe this year is gonna be a doozy. We’ll just hope it ain’t too bad.

Now it’s your turn. What’s been up in your world, nature-wise?
