Resolutions for the Depressed: Blame Republicans! [1]
['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']
Date: 2025-01-02
Oh, for the happy days when I only resolved to eat more pie!
A few years ago, I read that 20 million Americans suffer from depression, which is incredible to me, that it was exactly 20 million, not one more or less.
Last year, over 75 million Americans suffered at least one ‘major depressive episode’, in early November, so I’m sure the folks who count all of 2024’s depressed folk will have extra work to do.
The ancients warned us not to be too happy in good times, nor too sad in bad, and they counseled us that our pain now will be useful to us in the future. (Yeah, I’m so sad that I’m looking back millennia for inspiration.)
So, here are some of my recommended resolutions for 2025. Feel free to add in comments. Thanks.
Blame Republicans
Fly your “don’t blame me, I voted for Kamala” flag. While almost any complaint is fair game, remember that the truth hurts most.
Blame Republicans for any weather-related issues—floods, fires, droughts, storms—since they oppose taking on the climate crisis. Blame them for declining species and rising infectious diseases.
Blame Tr*mp for screwing up the southern border. In his first term, he failed to get Mexico to pay for a wall, he cruelly separated children from families, and he was less successful than his Democratic predecessors in deporting actual criminals. When his administration does even worse this time, blame Tr*mp.
Remember Reagan began his union-busting presidency by firing striking air traffic controllers. When Tr*mp tries to outdo Ronnie, blame him for strikes, low wages, and poor work conditions.
Tr*mp will also try to slash the safety net even more brutally than Reagan. Blame Republicans for homelessness, cutting food stamps, not treating folks with mental health issues, cost of health insurance or health care, lack of support for job seeking or training, and God help them when they try to cut social security.
Problems in your community? Blame Republicans for opposing public education and transportation, closing libraries, schools, recreation centers and hospitals, cutting non-violent community policing efforts, and improving bridges and roads.
Blame Republicans for making gun-violence the leading cause of premature death in the US. They overwhelmingly vote against common sense gun reforms.
Reagan also racialized the justice system, disproportionately imprisoning black people for minor offenses. Tr*mp promises to do much worse, so let’s blame Republicans for all the problems in the justice system, beginning with how unfair it is that rich and powerful folk like Tr*mp get away with committing crimes like sexual assault, fraud, tax evasion, obstructing justice, extorting allies for political favors, stealing national secrets, attempting to overthrow the government, and the countless other crimes Tr*mp either has committed or will.
Blame Republicans for every woman injured or killed due to their medieval abortion inquisition. Blame them for every unaffordable baby abandoned on the streets. Blame them for the lack of OB/GYNs and for all the costly court cases trying to free the imprisoned. Blame them for being anti-family.
Blame Tr*mp for encouraging violent global conflicts. Russian and North Korean troops are battering the gates of Europe, bombing hospitals and stealing children. Tr*mp’s autocratic friends are threatening peace and security around the world.
Blame Tr*mp for increasing the national debt again, for taxing construction workers more than CEOs, for trade wars and for corruption in his administrations.
Blame Republicans for all their stupid economic policies that help the rich at the expense of everyone else: cutting wages, cryptocurrency, enabling fraudsters and scammers, helping polluters, not prosecuting tax evaders, nuisance fees, removing rules, tariffs, and usurious interest rates.
Blame Republican business leaders and their elected Republican lackeys for AI, biased media, bad jobs, discrimination, lack of customer service, long hours, nepotism, overcharging, poor quality products, telemarketers, and wage theft.
Productive Resolutions
So complain, gripe, whine, groan, mutter and grumble! But do so about Tr*mp, Republicans and their policies. Mock, insult, ridicule, and dis. They deserve it. That’s also how they behave, even when they’re so clearly wrong. And it’s effective, especially when repeated every day in different conversations for four years.
Democrats are often solution-oriented problem solvers, so some inevitably try to find common ground. But the great risk of that is being blamed for Republican policy consequences in the future. They wanted the coming disasters enough to vote for a convicted felon, so make them own every single problem they either caused, enabled or failed to solve. Blame them thoroughly and incessantly.
If you feel that resolutions should be more productive, then apply those to your own life. If you’re interested in reading about my own resolutions, you may read them on my ad-free blog.
