Russia just lost a multibillion-dollar income stream

Russia is no longer able to send natural gas to Europe through Ukraine's pipelines after a five-year deal, struck before the war began, expired on Wednesday. It marks the end of a long-standing arrangement that used Ukraine as a conduit for westbound Russian gas — an agreement that continued even as full-scale war broke out in 2022. European countries that received that gas, such as Slovakia and Austria, were paying Russia for this energy. Reuters calculated in December that the Russian economy would earn about $5 billion in 2024 alone from piping gas through Ukraine. The news agency also estimated that Kyiv stood to receive between $800 million to $1 billion over that year from collecting transit fees.

FBI releases new video, information in hunt for Jan. 6 pipe bomber

The FBI has released new information and video of the individual who planted pipe bombs outside the headquarters of both the Republican National Committee and the Democratic National Committee on the night before the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, the bureau announced Thursday, after nearly four years of investigation that has led to little in the way of substantive leads about the suspect's identity. A video compilation produced by the FBI shows a new angle of the suspect placing one of the pipe bombs outside of the DNC headquarters just blocks from the Capitol, as well as an enhanced map showing the route the suspect walked that evening. The video further includes a graphic showing the FBI's estimate of the suspect's height -- which agents have calculated is 5 feet 7 inches, and animation showing the specific pair of Nike shoes the person was wearing.

Pro-Ukraine special forces soldier shot himself before Cybertruck explosion

The driver of the Tesla Cybertruck that exploded outside Donald Trump’s Las Vegas hotel was a highly-decorated counter terrorism Green Beret soldier who had previously shown support for Ukraine. Matthew Livelsberger, 37, was killed when the electric vehicle he rented blew up in the valet area outside the Trump International Hotel. He is thought to have packed the vehicle with firework-style mortars, camping fuel and canisters. Kevin McMahill, the Clark County sheriff, said that the Tesla driver had “sustained a gunshot wound to the head prior to the detonation of the vehicle”. A handgun was found at the feet of Livelsberger and officials believe that the shot was self-inflicted.

Russia warns of severe environmental damage as oil from damaged tankers washes up on beaches

Russian officials warned of severe environmental damage Wednesday as thousands of people came out to clean up tons of fuel oil that spilled out of two storm-stricken tankers more than two weeks ago in the Kerch Strait, near Moscow-occupied Crimea. More than 10,000 people, largely volunteers, raced to rescue wildlife and remove tons of sand saturated with mazut, a heavy, low-quality oil product, according to Russian news reports. Authorities in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region last week announced a region-wide emergency, as the fuel oil continued washing up on the coastline 10 days after one tanker ran aground and the other was left damaged and adrift on Dec. 15.

Suspected Chinese underwater spy drone found by fishermen

A submarine drone suspected to be from China was recovered in waters off the central Philippines, police said on Thursday, warning of "potential national security implications." Three fishermen found the drone on Monday around six miles off the coast of San Pascual in Masbate province, a police report said. The Philippines and China have for years clashed over maritime rights in the South China Sea as well as possession of reefs and islets. China claims almost the entire sea, brushing off rival claims from other countries and an international ruling that its assertion has no legal basis. The yellow drone marked "HY-119" was found floating at sea before being turned over to authorities, regional police director Andre Dizon told AFP.

Woman missing for 52 years found alive and well

A woman who went missing 52 years ago has been found alive and well. Sheila Fox, who disappeared from Coventry in 1972 when she was 16 years old, is safe and living in another part of the country, West Midlands Police said. The force published a fresh appeal to help find Ms Fox in December and released a photograph of her from around the time of her disappearance on their website and social media.

Rescuers find gruesome scene at a Honolulu home after a fireworks blast kills 3, injures over 20

Emergency crews arrived to a chaotic and gruesome scene in a Honolulu neighborhood after a large New Year's firework tipped over after being lit and ignited a fiery, shrapnel-studded blast that killed three people and injured more than 20 others, several of them critically. Two women died at the scene and a third woman died at a hospital, authorities said Wednesday as they implored people to abandon their New Year's tradition of setting off fireworks across the city. Officials promised tougher penalties for illegal fireworks. Hawaii Gov. Josh Green graphically described the deaths in a news conference Wednesday to emphasize the potential danger of fireworks. “We’re talking about the worst possible, war-zone injuries that took their lives.”

Florida sheriff's deputy identified as accused killer in 1979 cold case

A former Florida sheriff's deputy has been identified as the suspect in a store clerk's murder that took place 45 years ago, the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office said. John Greer has been named not only as the accused killer of the store clerk but also in the death of his wife a few months before that, the sheriff's office said. Deputies also investigated another suspicious death and some reported sexual assaults connected to Greer, but weren't able to gather conclusive evidence on those cases. "I want to be clear that this individual does not represent the overwhelmingly great men and women who have worked for this agency over our century-plus of existence," said Sheriff Bill Prummell said in a statement about the case released earlier this week.

Knocking from Phoenix garbage truck leads to woman's rescue

The woman, who was not seriously injured, was found around 4:45 a.m. Tuesday when the truck was in the area near 19th Avenue and Indian School Road, according to Phoenix Fire Department Capt. Rob McDade. She was taken to a hospital to be evaluated, McDade said. The garbage truck driver had heard knocking sounds coming from the inside of the container after he made his last dump. Police and fire crews were called, but by the time firefighters arrived, the woman had already been pulled from the container of the truck
