The recent National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) People of Color Conference (PoCC), held from December 4-7, 2024, in Denver, has sparked significant controversy due to allegations of antisemitic rhetoric. Speakers at the conference, including Dr. Suzanne Barakat and Dr. Ruha Benjamin, reportedly made statements accusing Israel of genocide and ethnic cleansing, and downplayed the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023.

These remarks have drawn sharp criticism from Jewish organizations. In a letter to NAIS President Debra Wilson, leaders from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), American Jewish Committee (AJC), Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA), and Prizmah: Center for Jewish Day Schools expressed deep concern. They highlighted that Jewish students and faculty felt targeted and unsafe, with some concealing their Stars of David and exiting the event.

In response, President Wilson issued an apology, stating, "There is no place for antisemitism at NAIS events, in our member schools, or in society." She pledged to implement changes to the speaker and content review process for future conferences, including requiring presentations to be submitted in advance with no last-minute changes permitted without explicit review and approval.

However, the situation remains complex. Some groups have defended the speakers, calling on NAIS to correct the record and issue a public apology to Dr. Barakat and Dr. Benjamin, who they believe have been unfairly smeared for their remarks.

As a writer deeply invested in educational equity and justice—and with a partner who has experience teaching in private schools—I am committed to exploring this issue further. To provide a comprehensive and nuanced perspective in an upcoming op-ed, I am seeking insights from those directly or indirectly affected by these events.

If you attended the PoCC or are part of the independent school community, I invite you to share your experiences and viewpoints. How did the conference's content impact you or your institution? What are your thoughts on the responses from NAIS and various organizations? Your contributions will be invaluable in fostering a balanced and informed discussion on this critical topic.

Please share your insights in the comments below or reach out directly through the contact information provided. Together, we can strive for a more inclusive and understanding educational environment.
