Social Security Fairness Act To Be Signed On Monday, January 6 [1]

The Social Security Fairness Act ( HR 82) will be signed on Monday, January 6. This is according to a Newsweek article that includes sources, such as the National Fraternal Order of Police, the International Association of Firefighters, as well as Senator Bill Cassidy, who was a major cosponsor of the legislation. Senator Sherrod Brown was also a major cosponsor in the Senate as well as Abigail Spanberger in the House.
This legislation deletes two provisions in the Social Security Act, which are called the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset, that together unfairly reduce the Social Security benefits of many federal state and local retirees who are drawing pensions but who also worked at jobs covered by Social Security. All of them have had their Social Security benefits reduced, and in some cases reduced dramatically, by as much as 60%. It also reduced the benefits of surviving spouses of these workers.
The rationale, for these provisions never made a lick of sense. When they were enacted, the proponents were basically trying to cut the cost of Social Security and said that people who drew retirement benefits from jobs that were not covered by Social Security, would be double dipping if they were also able to draw retirement benefits from jobs that were covered by Social Security. The absurdity of that argument, hardly merits explanation.
Many members of Congress have been trying for decades to repeal these provisions and finally it has happened. And with President Biden’s signature on Monday, this wrong will finally be corrected.
