Solstice Poem

Keep your Yule fires burning

Shadows and stars in this frozen land

Jack rabbit is nuzzling around-

Sometimes an owl.

Stoke the fire-

It's all, between us,

and the Night.

From the Wyrd World of MollyBloom

Hidden Terra

The Moon Men are here.

And there.

And Everywhere.

Once upon a time they prowled

the dark edges of forgotten

Cityscapes, hungry ghosts

wrapped in fog.

But no more.

Now sunlight glints off their

rainbow obsidian nails and

porcelain fangs.

In sky-high crystal towers

they plot.

And plunder.

Peace for Power

House of God, House of Cards

The Tower always falls.

Its gleaming façade of liquid silver first

fractures, then sloughs off painfully,

bit by bit.

Once sturdy walls still clutching

steel blue beams spectacularly implode.

The great foundations rumble, and in

half-light, finally crumble to reveal a

venomous snake pit below.

What will you do? when the Illusion shatters.

Swan dive to Freedom?

Or ride the ruins down, down, down into Despair?

Second Chances

I wanted to run my fingers through your hair,

but someone else was there first.

I wanted to trace the outline of your cheek

while your head rested on my pillow,

but someone else was there first.

I wanted to sink into the deepest depths

of your dark eyes and whisper, β€œI love you”,

but someone else was there first.

And as much as I wish I were

that someone else, I’m not.

But I’m here with you now

and I won’t hold back.

Works by A Pagan in Arizona.

Sympathetic Magic II. Acrylics on canvas panel. 2024. A 2D version of the skull titled Sympathetic Magic from earlier in the year.

Both versions hanging together on my wall.

I currently have two new skulls (both horses) in the cleaning process, but it'll be next year before I can work with them. When I run out of the real thing I create alternate versions of skulls I've already done, using those as references for the contours and natural colors of the 2D versions.

Another Song. Acrylics on canvas panel. 2024. A 2D version of the skull titled A Song for Cernunnos, which now belongs to my son.

Ceramic Arts by MEL in PGH

Hello Art Friends!

I only have 2 pieces to display for this expo. Why? Because holiday sales were rather brisk this year and I am sold out other pieces….not that I’m complaining. I have only just begun to replenish my inventory.

A group of potters in Pittsburgh have formed a new non-profit called Clay Pittsburgh. Their main mission is to promote interest and education in the ceramic arts. If you visit their link (above) you will see that one of their activities is hosting studio tours. Our studio participated in the tours in April and November. They were rather successful and we’re hoping that they become even more successful in the future.

My 2 new-ish pieces are a birdbath/birdfeeder and a 2-tile trivet:

WATERCOLOR AND INK BY RIVEROFTHEWEST

Storybook House, is a watercolor and ink drawing of the house I have lived in for many years. The house is in town but in this depiction it’s on a hill in the country. Artistic license has been taken especially as to landscaping.

The 1930 house is basically English Cottage style, but some details are β€œStorybook” which is one of many styles derived from Gothic Revival. The Storybook House is done in the style of illustrations in children's books of the 1920s and '30s. I expect to do more in this style when I illustrate the Endless Work-In-Progress, my local history book -- it's a fun technique!

The House Next Door 9”X12” Mixed Media: Watercolor/ Ink on Paper

The house I’ve lived in since 1970 was built by Herbert Roe, a high school custodian who built several homes still standing here in The Dalles,, Oregon. Roe and his wife were caretakers at Fort Dalles Museum between 1926-’29 – at that time the docent/caretaker actually lived in the museum building -- when they designed the β€œStorybook House” built in 1930. While building this house they lived next door in a small cottage dating back to around WWI or perhaps even the late Victorian era. That house was owned by the Roe family and used as a rental until quite recently.

The current owner felt that this pretty little house deserved a more cheerful color scheme than decades of white and beige, and has followed through with gusto. She continues to work on the house since the photo I used in 2023 was taken.
