You can get the details from the BBC here. Police report the driver pulled up in front of the hotel and smoke started coming from the vehicle, then it burst into flames. The dirver was killed and seven other people were injured. I am no expert, but this sounds like it could be a battery issue.

Cybertrucks have only been sold for a year, but have already had 7 major recalls. From issues as minor as the font size on warning lights being too small for drivers to read, to sticking gas pedals that would cause the vehicle to accelerate uncontrollably, one has to wonder what kind of Quality Control goes on at the Tesla factory. Other recalls were for windshield wiper motors that burned out (on a new vehicle?), improperly glued body trim that could fall off and create a danger for other drivers, non-working rear camera display, total loss of drive power due to inverter failure, and an issue with the Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS). Seven recalls in a single year is a staggeringly high rate for any car manufacturer.

According to this report, Tesla has been secretly replacing the truck’s battery packs, for the last 4 months, when the trucks were in for regular maintenance. Whether there is a connection between this reported “stealth recall” and this truck explosion, remains to be seen. It would be especially tragic if Tesla was aware of an issue but failed to initiate a full recall to correct the problem and it subsequently led to someone’s death.
