My Dear DK Family and Friends,
As the clock begins to tick closer and closer to midnight, closing the books on this year, I find myself reflecting quite a bit. Many of you were right there, in the driver’s seat for the highs and lows of my Congressional campaign. We fought damn hard. I am proud of how much we accomplished this year, and, despite the loss, I hope you are too.
You were right there with us when we ran the largest student voter registration drive in Florida’s history, mobilizing thousands of young people to engage in their democracy for the first time. We were the only campaign in the country powered entirely by a Gen Z team—bright, passionate minds who redefined what it means to be a political campaign in the 21st century. We also authored and pushed for the Florida Green New Deal, which will go up to the capitol this January. You were there for that too.
When disaster struck, we didn't hesitate to use campaign resources to support hurricane victims, proving politics can be a vehicle to do real, immediate good. You helped us raise that money for those victims. And even though we ran in the second-most conservative district in Florida—second only to Matt Gaetz's—we far outperformed the preceding Democratic candidate.
The odds were against us, but we decided to fight. And though the results didn't land in our favor, we set the stage for something so much bigger.
As the 2024 year ends, my primary role as a researcher comes back into focus. In August, I graduated with a Master’s in Science, where I studied carbon farming—an essential solution to the climate crisis. In May, I’ll begin my Ph.D., diving deeper into this vital field.
But before I step back into that role, I’m using these next few months to launch something new: an organization that acts as both a think tank and an advocacy hub, The Climate Fund, run entirely by Gen Z climate and policy experts.
Here's what we will do:
Hold Trump Accountable: We'll maintain a public record of every climate aggression of the Trump administration. Knowledge is power, and this log will arm the next generation with the tools to resist his destructive agenda. We will also work with other youth and experts to suggest how we can counter his moves.
Support and Elect Climate-Smart Democrats: We will prioritize working with elected officials and other Democrats who prioritize the climate crisis.
Empower Youth: Partnering with the Sunrise Movement and other local organizations, we will run an online climate training program to equip young activists to lead the charge toward a sustainable future.
Turn Research into Action: Utilizing my forthcoming Master's thesis—currently in the publication process—we will collaborate with state and local officials to advance policies promoting carbon farming and other carbon sequestration methods.
Support Gen Z Talent: We will hire students and professionals from Generation Z, providing them with the resources to act effectively against climate regression.
Support Local Green New Deal Efforts: State by state, we will push for and support local, organized efforts to implement Green New Deals.
This isn’t the end of my fight; it’s the beginning of a new chapter. We may not have won the election, but we’ve proven that hope, resilience, and action can ignite change even in the toughest of circumstances.
So as we enter 2025, I ask you to hold onto hope, dig in, and continue fighting for the world we deserve. I’m not giving up, and I hope you won’t either.
Together, we can build a brighter future.
As you can see above, we have quite the ambitious set of goals. If you would, please visit our ActBlue page and help get the Climate Fund off the ground: secure.actblue.com/...
Wishing you a hopeful and determined New Year,
Rock
