The Sky is Falling! [1]

It’s really just another sign of the times. As Chicken Little warns “The sky is falling!” This Chicken Little is named Mitch McConnell. He hollers, “If the Democrats take over Congress, they’ll do it! You know they will! They will kill our sacred filibuster rule and operate as a straight-line up or down Democracy. No tricks or fine print, just straight up or down votes, majority rule. Do you want to just let that happen?
Mitch is trying his best to make his point among the intelligentsia. Look, we all hate Donald Trump here, but our world might come to an end if we don’t, at least, try and help him. Have you really thought this through? Possibly losing control of the House, the Senate, and the White House. Sobering and powerful medicine that. Are you really just going to sit there smiling with a silly grin and do nothing, while we’re about to be nuked by the Democrats?
Mitch is an old school stoic bean counter, who never goes into a vote without already knowing the outcome. He is a tactician, and he’s pulling the fire alarm. “The sky is falling!” He’s reading the tea leaves and suwaneeing over the goat innards and the message he has divined is “Oh shit! The sky is falling!” Never mind what your own polls say, listen to what your opponent is saying.
A wholesale Republican panic as once safe states lite up on the matrix board as only leaning Republican or the dreaded, toss-up. Georgia, Florida, and North Carolina? A crack in the old South and the solid South? If Donald Trump can’t hold the South, it’s all over politically. Save your money, more TV won’t help.
Mr. Trump chooses to stand behind his endorsement of North Carolina, Lt. Governor Mark Robinson aka, the “Black Nazi.” That will really help with the undecided voters, don’t you think? It’s crazy, in a crazy Trump sort of way. The entire political establishment has turned on Robinson. No one would blame Trump for joining them and condemning Robinson as well. It’s in Trump best interest to do so, but he won’t. Just because, because he’s a contrarian. Trump might call it some perverse form of loyalty when it’s only a bad temperament. If you told Donald Trump to stand, he’d sit down.
How do Mitch McConnell and the other Republicans reconcile these political facts? Trump support is eroding and as so often happens when a con man wears out his welcome, a backlash could be forming. Republicans and independent voters openly hostile towards Donald Trump and the Republican ticket. You can’t forget J.D. Vance in this here train wreck. And someday, when they paint this story on a cave wall someplace J.D. will be featured prominently.
Get a good look at J.D. now, because after the election you won’t get to see him again, probably ever. Gee, J.D. Sometimes, it’s like we just met. And then sometimes, it’s like you’ve been here for too long already and overstayed your welcome. A man with a brilliant future behind him. A man on the way up and out. J.D. reached for a falling star and only made it fall faster. After signing on to Team Trump as the opportunity of a lifetime. J.D. finds his life in ruins in record time. Only Anthony Scaramucci was ruined faster by Donald Trump.
Do you know what it means politically, when a Presidential candidate explains to the press about people seen leaving his rally, weren’t really leaving? Yep! That is exactly what it means. Maybe they were using the restroom or purchasing some moderately priced merchandise. More likely, the bloom is off the rose. Mr. Trump’s cult status has made his rallies an “event” or even a pilgrimage, like a White trash Woodstock. Mr. Trump was just a thing to go see or do for free, over the weekend. But if they are leaving before the show’s over, will they come back in November?
Republicans fear losing Congressional races which under normal circumstances they would probably win. Headed over Niagara Falls in a Trump barrel. Fearing Republican voters either won’t show up to the polls or will show up with blood in their eyes only to express their displeasure with the Republican ticket. Last time around, Arizona’s answer to Cruella DeVille, Republican Kari Lake, successfully managed to convince over 30,000 registered Republican voters to vote for her Democratic opponent. Yeah, just like that!
This time around in her Senate race, Kari Lake is trailing by double digits in Arizona. You remember Arizona, don’t you? A former Republican red bastion of John McCain salted by Yankee retirees and California expats, until finally turning brand blue!
Lake is a good test case. A mini-Trump in drag spouting the same border rhetoric and abortion is a sin Bible thumping nonsense. Republicans are on the wrong side of the issues and about to pay the price for it. Time marches on but Republicans don’t. It’s still 1955 and a woman’s place is in the home. What does she need with her own credit card? What does she want to go to college for? To find a husband? Dreams and aspirations? Why can’t she just share her husband’s dreams?
But if the issue were just Donald Trump or just Abortion rights, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad. The two issues when conjoined together become a deadly cocktail for Republicans. The electorate is growing younger and more tolerant, and the Republican voter is growing older and less tolerant. What Donald Trump has done to the Republican Party is to remake the Party over in his own image. To a generation of voters Donald Trump is the Republican Party. And when those voters begin to grow tired of Donald Trump or his time expires, what’s left then for the Republican Party?
If Trump becomes further toxic to voters, what then? Then the sky is falling, and Mitch has got it exactly right. Love him or hate him, Mitch isn’t a dumb guy. If Mitch McConnell is trying to tell you the sky is falling for Republicans, it probably is.
“As happens sometimes, a moment settled and hovered and remained for much more than a moment. And sound stopped and movement stopped for much, much more than a moment.”
― John Steinbeck
