This diary is a followup to one I wrote on 9/20 titled “October Surprise.” I hope I’m wrong, but …

Trump knows he’ll lose unless he energizes his flagging campaign. Another candidate might choose to accept the invitation to a second debate and strut his stuff on stage. But that strategy is not available to Trump. First off, his followers are easily put off by those pesky polysyllabic words that tend to pop up in debates. Second, in the first go-round with Harris, which he termed, “One of my best debates ever.” Trump got his clock cleaned.

So what’s a poor, addled, white supremacist, malignant narcissist to do? Certainly not the typical redoubled efforts to GOTV. Nope, not after he’s already subcontracted his swing state ground game. Optics is the answer! Truth-twisting, gut grabbing optics! So Trump, Vance et all “create a story” about pet-eating Haitians (From Hatia, no less.) Even as the entire news media (Fox et al are “entertainment media.”) along with the Republican governor and mayor denounce the story, the Trump campaign works hard to keep it afloat.

They’re not embarrassed, not worried. The Haitians they are targeting are not naturalized citizens. They’re here legally under “Temporary Protective Status.” The campaign

Is doubtlessly aware that 54% of Americans support mass deportations. (CNN report) In any event, immigration has long been the adrenaline fueled heartbeat of Trump’s mass appeal.

So he promotes the idea that he’ll visit Springfield, even though he “may not make it out alive,” may “never be seen again” a resounding clarion call to his para-military followers and Maga cultists to assemble in Springfield. The Republican governor cannot dissuade him. No one can. It’s his one chance to swing election momentum.

He’ll hold a rally. Insist the Haitians are here by Democratic legal chicanery and should be deported. He’ll promise that he will deport them once he’s elected. Perhaps he’ll even once again offer to “be there with you” as the assembled mob marches through Springfield. It won’t be difficult to incite violence, leading a riot that will make national news.

The optics will be - a white male candidate standing up for white America against a horde of dark skinned people recently released from prison and insane asylums. No matter how the state, police, national guard and sane citizens respond, the optics will work for Trump. It will energize the racist vote. He’ll run with it. And on it.
