Readers are using a serious medical condition as a derogatory term [1]

In several posts on the Daily Kos, I have seen Donald Trump described as “neuro-syphilitic.” This is being used as a derogatory term. It is true that he this condition leads to dementia-like symptoms and that Mr. Trump’s past behavior has put him at risk for sexually transmitted diseases.

However, our community would never tolerate the use of any other disease that affects cognition as an insult. This is true even of other diseases which can be spread via sexual activities. We would never stand for a member posting a diary saying that he has “HIV -related dementia.”

If Mr. Trump does indeed have neurosyphilis, he deserves our sympathy rather than our scorn (although he should not become president). If he does not, then we should not say that he has this disease which has destroyed so many lives.

PLEASE DO NOT SAY THAT ANY PERSON HAS A MEDICAL PROBLEMUNLESS YOU CAN PROVE THAT HE/SHE ACTUALLY MEETS THE DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA OF THE DISEASE.
