The Point Defiance Zoo in Tacoma, Washington is a small zoo with some interesting animals.
Muskox
Muskox live in arctic areas of northern Canada, Alaska, and Greenland. The males weigh about 800 pounds and the females with about 500 pounds. While the muskox may look somewhat similar to bison, they are more closely related to goats and sheep. According to the zoo:
“They have two-layered coats. Their soft underwool, called qiviut (kiv-ee-ute), is shed every spring. Qiviut is warmer than sheep’s wood and softer than cashmere.”
The long, outer guard hairs hang nearly to the ground.
Crested Porcupine
These large rodents are active at night. Their diet includes bark, roots, tubers, fallen fruit, and cultivated crops. According to the zoo:
“When threatened, porcupines rattle their quills and stamp their feet. If that doesn’t work, they may swing their tail or run backward to stick their quills into an attacker.”
Red Wolf
Malayan Tapir
The Malayan tapir has a diet of leaves, buds, twigs, and fruit of low-growing forest plants and water plants. The narrow head allows them to plow through dense vegetation. They are 6-8 feet long and weigh 650-950 pounds. According to the zoo:
“A long sensitive snout helps a tapir reach leaves overhead and sniff out ‘scent stories’ left by other animals.”
Sumatran Tiger
These carnivores eat mammals such as tapirs, porcupines, deer, pigs, and anoa. They are 7-9 feet long, 3 feet tall at the shoulder, and weigh 165-308 pounds. The stripes on the front legs are unique and can be used to identify individual tigers.
