Last week we were looking at a potentially concerning but still manageable 10% increase in hospitalizations due to Covid nationwide over the week before (and subsequently revised downward to 8%) — but this week we are seeing a much more worrying increase of 17%. Hospitalizations are now running at nearly twice the pace they were at just 7 weeks ago, and have pulled to within about 25% of last year’s levels at this point in the calendar.
Even worse, while none of the CDC regions exceeded even a 15% rate of increase last week, well over half the country saw at least a 20% jump in hospitalizations this week, with the hardest hit areas being the entire East and Gulf Coasts (CDC Regions 1-4 and 6). Thus far, only the Northwest and North Central parts of the country (Regions 7 and 10) seem to be relatively unaffected by the current surge. Of additional concern, it’s also worth noting that the weekly death toll has now ticked back above 1500 for the first time since late March — even though it’s still running about 40% below last year’s level.
Needless to say, if anyone plans to be getting together with family or friends for New Years Eve tomorrow, masking up would probably be a good idea — it looks like we could be in for a fairly rough ride over at least the next few weeks.
