Nearing the end of another year and this year, it happens to fall on workdays just as Christmas was also a work day for me.
Prior to COVID, I had a different assignment on the job where Thanksgiving was a regular workday and, in fact, it was (and is) one of the busiest days of the year.
I think that most people look forward to the holiday season in order to be able to spend time off with their friends and family. I occasionally do as well.
But I do spend the majority of my holidays alone, maybe working, maybe pooched in front of the TV watching sports or working.
In my 20’s and 30’s, it probably would not have been a good idea to spend the holidays— or too many other days— with my family because of the inevitable drama and all that goes with it.
That doesn’t happen anymore when I go to family get-togethers, with a couple of exceptions.
Still, holidays (especially the end of the year holidays) are times when I prefer to be in contemplation (or brooding, lol) with some work to be done and the possibility of being paid time and a half for it.
I also think that I wouldn’t be writing about this if I didn’t miss family an eeny-weeny bit, even the drama.
I also remember that we are raised in a society where we’re supposed to think certain ways about these end of year celebrations.
Reading this again, it pains me to say that in this respect, too, I am becoming a bit like Mom. As a 911 operator, she worked every holiday. Sometimes she worked a double shift ($$$$$$$$$$$). We missed her a little bit. But there was always someone in the family (either my grandmother or my aunt) that would feed us.
That’s also one of the nice things about working for the Great Orange Satan. There’s always one more thing to do, always a deadline to be met. It keeps me busy.
More after I tell you who we are and what we do here at Top Comments.

It’s difficult not to realize that this is a world full of pain and anger right now.
There are conflicts on every continent. We even get the news of a little piece of ice here, little piece of ice there, an enormous chunk of ice nearly every week breaking off of Antarctica, as opposed to the frozen stability of the seventh continent that we’ve come to expect.
Some days I hate watching the news, listening to the news, reading the news, and one of my jobs happens to consist, in large part, of the news.
It gets bleak sometimes. But...there’s always that eternal wisdom of Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone.
“Beauty is where you find it.”
Which means that one has to look for it. Sometimes it’s even right under one’s nose.
Happy New Years everyone!

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
