There are reports that a Russian Tupelev TU-22M3 long-range strategic bomber went down over the Kursk area of Russia, which is north of Belgorod and Kharkiv. The TU-22M3 is a variable-sweep wing bomber that first entered service in 1969. It is used by Russia to launch cruise missiles against Ukraine.
Ukraine has destroyed or damaged at least two TU-22 bombers previously — both in drone attacks on airfields.
Assuming this actually happened (there has been no official confirmation and no video), it could have been from a Ukrainian missile, or from mechanical problems or even friendly fire. Ukrainian TV interviewed a guy who claimed it was shot down by a Bayraktar.
The reports generated a lot of speculation about how Ukraine might have shot the bomber down. Russia claims it shot down three US-supplied HARM anti-radar missiles in the Belgorod area, which is not far from Kursk. The speculation is that the HARMs were part of an attack to suppress Russian air defenses to clear the way for Ukrainian planes to go after the TU-22.
