RIP Tommy Smothers [1]

Another of the people who improved my life has passed away. Tommy Smothers was funny when I first saw him and his brother Dick on...well I don’t recall which show; for a while they seemed to be everywhere but it must have been some time in the early 1960s when I was in my early teens. Unlike other folk groups they were as much a comedy team as they were musicians. They were hilarious and slightly off-color. They were subtly subversive and occasionally not so subtly. Of the two Tommy was the most outspoken. In the late 60s that got their famous comedy show booted off the air but made them heroes to many people my age at the time.
I will never, ever forget Tommy’s most famous line. “Mom always liked you best!”
Rest in Peace Tommy. You made the world a better place.
