The American news industry is increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few big conglomerates or billionaires with other business interests. This is a problem for our democracy, even when these corporations don’t promote conspiracies and coups.
We need independent media to keep a diversity of voices and priorities in reporting, both to serve all communities and to assure that we have reliable and comprehensive information about topics that concern us. The reduced diversity of news publishers is giving us greater conformity and decreases our ability to bypass conflicts of interest.
Saving local reporting is inexpensive and quickly pays for itself, so please do what you can to support your favorite source of independent news — whether this is your local reporter with a website, an analyst on Substack (or a better alternative), or a national magazine with in-depth reporting on commonly ignored topics. We also need public-spirited platforms that will allow citizens to obtain and share information — including Wikipedia, the Internet Archive, Mastodon servers, and even Daily Kos*. All of these need donations and volunteers.
With the 2024 elections coming up and ongoing right-wing efforts to overthrow the government, we need to immediately reinforce our ability to obtain accurate information about events in the world.
* I have no special affiliation with Daily Kos, just a regular community member.
