Israel and Hamas Causing Untold Suffering [1]

In the Middle East, there is now another one of many wars such as those that have plagued the world since [mostly] men learned how to stand upright. I say men, not because I believe women are hardly ever tempted by violence, but because testosterone is such a rich invitation to travel miles and miles to take from someone else what you don’t believe they ought to have. It is the end of 2023, and the beginning of 2024 seems doomed to begin with the deaths of many innocent people, guilty of living in the wrong place at an inconvenient time.
In October there was an attack on Israel that consumed many young lives. The guilty party seems to live on most radar screens as a terrorist organization, and the actions it has taken since October in no way redefine its character. Israel has been unhappy with Hamas for some time, and they have been saving up their anger (and weapons) for just such an event. As the 7 October event was incredibly brutal, so Israel’s military response has been nightmarish for the people of Palestine (non-Hamas).
Sadness comes to mind when we contemplate what our world could become by following this recent path in the Middle East. What if the US decided to unravel a little of our own local history?
Founded in 1865, the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) extended into almost every southern state by 1870 and became a vehicle for white southern resistance to the Republican Party’s Reconstruction-era policies aimed at establishing political and economic equality for Black Americans. (www.history.com/...)
Many people would likely want the government to eradicate the KKK, wouldn’t they? It’s not that easy, though. This is an organization with many present-day members, it is based on hate, and there are supporters all over the country. So much for destroying a hate group that’s close by.
Well, maybe we could work on an even larger threat; could we do anything to stop Iran’s fiddling around in world politics? Some of the names they go by are: “Islamic Revolutionary Guards, Pasdaran (Guards), Revolutionary Guards, Sepah (Corps), Sepah-e Pasdaran-e Enghelab-e Eslami; [and] Quds (‘Jerusalem’) Force.” Suddenly, this independent threat seems much larger. (www.cia.gov/...)
Here is a list of Iran’s targets: “Israel, Sunni regimes perceived as a threat (particularly Saudi Arabia), the Islamic State (ISIS), US military forces in the Middle East, [and] Iranian dissidents.” See, they don’t much like the US either.
I know this brief treatment doesn’t clarify the picture for near-future action. Getting people to stop killing people, whether next door or far away, has always carried difficulty as its greatest problem. I don’t have a solution; pretty obviously, Israel has no workable way to resolve this war with Hamas. The most unfortunate part of this is that the Palestinians who simply live in Gaza are dying at a terrifying rate, and they should not be doing so.
How do we convince Mr. Netanyahu that it’s in the best interests of everyone to dial it back a bit? It certainly will slow the death rate for innocent Gazans, and the US will have less trouble trying to “sell” a better solution. What do we do that will keep more people alive? Help!!
