New Day Cafe: Christmas Eve Open Thread: Santa Tales and Tails [1]

Good morning, Cafe! Merry Christmas Eve. Here’s hoping that most all the holiday chores are done, and there’s not much to do but finish the cooking.
Pull up a comfy seat, grab a cup of whatever makes you happy, and maybe a tasty nosh. Put up yer feet, tilt back yer Santa hat, and join us for a while.
I think I’ve mentioned, over the years, that my own family tradition is the Twelve Days of Christmas.
Our tree never went up before Christmas Eve, and it came down on Twelfth Night, the eve of the Feast of The Epiphany.
Christmas Eve was when all the decorating got done, the gifts got wrapped and we went to Midnight Mass. We younger kids got a nap after supper, so we would be OK to stay up late for Mass.
When we got home from Midnight Mass, or right before bed, my mum would read the nativity from the Gospel of Luke. You are probably familiar with it, as it is the same one that is recited in A Charlie Brown Christmas. Most churches use the Gospel of John, it seems, but I have always preferred Luke.
Then, we got a taste of the other Christmas magic. We got to open ONE small gift. We got to choose it, but got waved off if it was the “big gift in a small package.” Just a taste of what was to come.
Off to bed we went, with visions of sugarplums dancing in our heads. Never mind how many years it took for me to know what a sugarplum was...they danced!
Even though I have been away from the Church for decades, I still remember the traditions, and feel the pull of them. There is still, for me, something miraculous at this time of year. It probably goes back to my Pagan roots, as well as to my more modern Irish roots.
If you’re not too Christmas music’d out...please to enjoy this little beauty:
Please feel free to share some of your own family traditions, old or new. Even if you shared them last year, we’d love to hear them again!
And whatever else….have a Happy, Merry, Joyous Whatever!
