The best offense is a good defense. No I didn't mistype that the other way around. If you don't yet know why, then just ask Zelensky.
With better defenses all across the front line, you have the freedom to attack your enemy anywhere you see them weak. And they will not have the option to distract you with a counterattack elsewhere, because, their attack will fail against your lightly manned defenses.
And that is why Zelensky's renewed orders to focus massively on defenses should not be seen as any sort of acknowledgement that Ukraine is loosing its appetite to regain territory after its stalled counteroffensive. Rather, it is a fresh realization that this is an offensive war that the more defensive side will win. For a change, it is Ukraine that is learning this from Russia.
Ukraine has the advantage of having shorter supply lines. So it is easier defended than the Russian side. But by focusing more on offense at the expense of defense, mistakes were made.
While it would be wrong to say that Ukraine doesn't have good defenses, they are simply not formidable enough. Even in Avdiivka, which had supposedly been heavily fortified in 9 years of war, massive gaps existed behind the first layers of fortifications in the north, allowing Russia to advance faster than it should have.
Ukraine is rectifying this. The sooner it is able to, the faster it can resume it's offensive again.
