The historic Balfour Dock Building in Tacoma, Washington, originally constructed in 1900, now houses the Foss Waterway Seaport Maritime Museum. The plaque showing that the building is on the National Register of Historic Places describes it as “Where Rails Met Sails.” The building served as a transfer warehouse between the railroad, which was on one side of the building, and cargo ships at the docks on the other side of the building.

The Northern Pacific Railroad founded the city “New Tacoma” in 1875 in an area just south of Tacoma City. The two merged in 1885 to become Tacoma which grew from 2,000 in 1880 to more than 36,000 by 1890.

The Foss Waterway Seaport Maritime Museum includes a railroad display. According to the Museum:

“With federal permission, Northern Pacific laid track across the Puyallup Reservation, beginning the theft of Puyallup Reservation lands. In the decades after, developers and speculators employed various means, including violence, to seize the land. By the early 1900s, non-Natives controlled three-quarters of the reservation. Nonetheless, the Puyallup remained and continued to care for their community and the land.”

While Northern Pacific was the first transcontinental railroad to reach Tacoma, it was followed by Great Northern in 1909, Union Pacific in 1910, and the Milwaukee Road in 1911.
