2023: My year in review [1]

What. A. Year.

Think back.

This time a year ago, we were gearing up for the holidays, celebrating Senator Baldwin’s Respect for Marriage Act, collecting signatures for local candidates, and picking out outfits for Governor Evers’ second inaugural on January 3.

At that moment, our state Supreme Court still had a right-wing majority, all access to abortion care in Wisconsin had been frozen, and nobody had taken a serious run at impeaching anyone in our state for more than a century.

And then came 2023.

The biggest, most intense, and most expensive judicial race in American history—and a landslide for Janet Protasiewicz, for freedom, and for democracy. Court decisions that led to Planned Parenthood clinics and other providers resuming full-spectrum reproductive health care. A serious threat to impeach Justice Janet—followed by a massive grassroots outcry that led to a rare climb-down by Robin Vos.

And so so much more. Constant attempts by the GOP legislature to mangle our laws, our elections, and even our schools, all the way through to the latest extortion effort led by the legislature against the UW system. A bipartisan breakthrough for local government funding. An implosion of the GOP House majority that led to Mike Johnson, who attempted to overturn the 2020 presidential election and wants to criminalize birth control, becoming Speaker of the House. A Republican presidential primary debate in Milwaukee that didn’t include a certain Donald J. Trump… who is now the overwhelming favorite for the GOP nomination.

Through it all, through twists and turns and ups and downs, you kept the faith. You kept the fires lit. You organized for Janet in the spring, against impeachment in the late summer, and for One Year to Win in the fall. Right now, you might be helping a local candidate gather signatures to get on the ballot next year.

You (reading this right now!) kept our party united in a time of division. You kept hoping, in a moment of despair. You believed we could make a difference even when the GOP was threatening to overturn an election.

You powered this party.

I feel so lucky to be in this fight with you. In 2024, we’ll need all of that grit, resilience, and determination yet again. I know you’ll be there—because I’ve seen you in action.

Let’s celebrate the holiday season—and rest well, because in 2024, it’s all on the line. Yet again. So let’s win again, too.
