[During a recent campaign stop in Durham, N.H., The Washington Post reported that Trump approvingly quoted Vladimir Putin and praised Viktor Orban of Hungary, both of whom he sees as strong [albeit authoritarian] leaders. My response to Mr. Trump's praise of both men, as well as his belief that democracy is a scam, follows.]
Once upon a recent time in a kingdom not too far away – domestically seated – it appears a nobleman of your repute has grown quite enchanted with tales of faraway lands, lands where strongmen sing ballads of one another’s virtues. Lyrics of praise between you, Mr. Putin, and Mr. Orban have reached the ears of the American masses almost as fervently as the tales of Robin Hood reached the peasantry – albeit with a markedly different moral takeaway.
Stories have it that these ballads include musings on the ‘rottenness’ of our homeland and its political ballet. One might chuckle at the irony, given the lengthy historical accounts of America’s strong, albeit imperfect, democratic traditions. For more than 24 side-splitting seasons (245 years, that is, but who’s counting?), the United States has flaunted a rather incessant habit of sticking to democratic values, much like one’s fondness for deep-fried butter at a county fair – it’s an obsession that just won’t quit.
It has also come to the kingdom’s attention that you’ve narrated a prodigious account of your first act as the realm’s chief – from the politicization of those hallowed grounds of Justice, with Sirs Barr and Clark leading your round-table. The jesters in the court remain in awe at such a bold reimagining of the term’ law and order’.
Also, murmurs have been meandering through the grapevines, reminiscent of forgotten lore, about the roots of your lineage - a quintessential immigrant’s tale, no less heroic than those inscribed on Lady Liberty’s golden manifesto. You do hail from such hearty stock that the bards might forget the mothers of some of your heirs hail from shores afar, blessing your narrative with a cosmopolitan flair that rivals the Tower of Babel.
Speaking of heirs and golden towers, it seems an ancestral amnesia has beset you. If family chronicles served true, a bygone era might have cast a skeptical eye upon the Trump escutcheon’s entrance into the Land of the Free – but let’s make compliments, not conjectures.
Have I mentioned your uncanny gift – akin to a court magician – to attribute to others that which you harbor in your trove? I hear whispers from every village tavern about the latest proclamation: “Biden Attacks Democracy.” The mirror trick – a classic!
As your correspondent, I’m bound by the sacred jester oath to tickle your fancy and prick your conscience. So, let it be inscribed that if your camaraderie with the Tsar of the Kremlin and the Magyar Maestro is as joyful as festive Yuletide gatherings, one can only imagine the merry life that awaits you amidst their sovereignties. Should you wish for a change of scenery, to delve deeper into the philosophies of these acclaimed beacons – do remember, every portcullis is potentially a door, every moat a swimming pool, with just a splash of imagination.
As your journey unfolds, whether on this star-spangled soil or one kissed by the embers of the Hungarian sunset or the frost of the Russian steppe, it is the eternal hope of democracy that you will embrace the reflective wisdom of your own story, inspiring a tapestry woven with threads more in line with the velveteen fabric of freedom America so adores.
Sincerely, with an obligatory quill flourish,
A Country Bard (With time-traveling capabilities, bearing wisdom wrapped in parchment)
P.S. Should you tire of the age-old adages of your new Eastern courts, remember America’s sprawling landscape is ever generous – for even its satirists can offer expedient counsel on booking one-way carriages across splendid oceans blue.
