“With great sadness and sorrow we announce to the Kuwaiti people, to the Arab and Islamic Nations, and the nations of the world, the passing of his highness, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, the Emir of the state of Kuwait” said Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah Al-Mubarak, the Minister of Emiri Diwan Affairs.

Sheikh Nawaf was seen by diplomats as a consensus builder even though his reign was marked by an intense standoff between the government and elected parliament, which had hindered key structural reforms in the oil rich Gulf state.
