12 Songs of Christmas: Silent Night [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Each day until Christmas, I am going to write briefly about a Christmas song I enjoy. Because I can, that's why. And I am an unabashed corny dork.

This is a beautiful song, full stop. I have hardly heard a bad version of this song, and there have been hundreds if not thousands recorded. It is perhaps the most human of the Christmas carols, and that seems appropriate. Strip away the religion and the driven from the story of Jesus' birth and it is a harrowing, heartbreaking tale. A young woman carrying a baby who is not her husband's is forced out of her home into a strange land, turned away by all at her hour of need and forced to give birth with no help and in a manger.

But is also a hopeful story. The husband does not abandon her. The baby lives. The family returns home. And while ultimately their story, stripped of its religious underpinnings, is not an entirely happy one, no real-life story ever entirely is. That, perhaps, is what makes it a compelling one.

Silent Night captures that humanity amidst the divine. At its core, it is a lullaby, a gentle prayer of thanksgiving from a new mother for one of the most common and wonderful miracles of all -- a healthy newborn.

Silent night, Holy night

All is calm, all is bright

Round yon virgin, mother and child

Holy infant, so tender and mild

Sleep in heavenly peace,

Sleep in heavenly peace. Silent night, Holy night

Shepherds quake, at the sight

Glories stream from heaven afar

Heavenly, hosts sing Hallelujah.

Christ the Savior is born,

Christ the Savior is born. Silent night, Holy night

Son of God, love's pure light

Radiant beams from thy holy face

With the dawn of redeeming grace,

Jesus, Lord at thy birth

Jesus, Lord at thy birth

Jesus, Lord at thy birth Jesus, Lord at thy birth.
