CNN —
“Poison control centers across the US say they are seeing a steep increase in calls related to semaglutide, an injected medication used for diabetes and weight loss, with some people reporting symptoms related to accidental overdoses.”
The main problem sems from a shortage of this drug. Used for diabetics and weight control, a shortage occurred. The government allowed some outside sellers to compound the drug. Because they didn’t use approved ingredients there were some problems. These outside manufacturers also used an injector pen that was poorly marked, Many of the overdoses were by people over 40 and even in their 60s.
CNN goes on to note “Even when used as directed by a doctor, people can have stomach and bowel side effects, including nausea, vomiting and constipation, especially when they start the drugs.” As the body takes a considerable amount of tie to work its way out of the body, emergician rooms can do little except give the patient intravenous fluids and anti-nausea drugs.
