12 Songs of Christmas: I Saw Three Ships [1]

Each day until Christmas, I am going to write briefly about a Christmas song I enjoy. Because I can, that's why. And I am an unabashed corny dork.
This is one of the odder Christmas carols. The entire premises seems to be that Jesus and his mum sailed to England on the day of his birth, or at least on one of his birthdays. Because why not? This makes no sense. So, the Son of God is going to take time from his busy schedule of saving all of humanity for a side trip to England? Of course. Why? Cause we're English, obviously -- what are you, French? But why sail -- he's the Son of God, he can do anything? We're on an island, mate -- how else do you get to an island? But why three ships -- isn't that a bit ostentatious for a man who told his disciples to leave their worldly goods behind and follow him? Look, mate, he's the Son of God -- he don't travel economy, right?
This song is insane. It has everything: regional arrogance, a complete lack of imagination past the initial premise, and an implied misunderstanding of the theology of the Bible that borders on the prosperity gospel heresy. Its awesomely ridiculous. It is also a beautiful song, and one that is completely and unabashedly joyous. All the angles in heaven shall sing and should sing. Christians do believe their savior has been born, and that should be a reason to celebrate. And this song certainly celebrates. It is a joyous explosion of a tune that can withstand not a moments scrutiny or thought and I adore it.

I saw three ships come sailing by
On Christmas day, on Christmas day
I saw three ships come sailing by
On Christmas day, on Christmas day
And what was in those ships all three
On Christmas day, on Christmas day?
And what was in those ships all three
On Christmas day, on Christmas day?
The Virgin Mary and Christ were there
On Christmas day, on Christmas day
The Virgin Mary and Christ were there
On Christmas day in the morning
And all the angels in heaven shall sing
On Christmas day, on Christmas day
And all the angels in heaven shall sing
On Christmas day in the morning
Then let us all rejoice and sing
On Christmas day, on Christmas day
Then let us all rejoice and sing
On Christmas day in the morning
