White to move and mate in two #443- Halley's Comet is coming back [1]

Halley's Comet is coming back … in 38 years. Halley’s comet reached aphelion, the farthest distance from the Sun, last Saturday. Now it begins its long journey back for a close approach to the Sun (perihelion) on July 28, 2061, when it will swing by inside the orbit of Venus. Currently, the comet is located near the orbit of Pluto.

Halley’s comet as seen by ESA’s Giotto spacecraft in 1986, the last time the comet visited the inner Solar System. Giotto was ESA’s first deep mission, and obtained the first close-up images of a comet. This image was taken from a distance of about 2000 km from Comet Halley. The Sun is located towards the left of the image, provoking outbursts of gas and dust from the comet’s nucleus.

I am sure most of us saw it in 1986. How many of us expect to see it again 38 years from now?

Comet Halley, in its 1066 appearance, is shown in the Bayeux Tapestry, depicting in a scene of the Battle of Hastings. The tapestry is displayed in a special museum in Bayeux, Normandie (France).

But we don’t have to wait for 38 years; there will be plenty of comets to watch between now and Halley's return.

For example, newly discovered comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) from the Oort cloud promises to be a bright one, with perihelion on Sep 27, 2024 and nearest approach to earth on Oct 12, 2024.

Now, let’s find the tricky move to solve today’s puzzle composed by noted Italian chess composer Alberto Mari (1882 – 1953) in 1934.

P.S.

The chess puzzle is published on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:00 p.m. ET.

It is customary for advanced players to wait till midnight ET before posting the full solution. Before then, they provide some stats about the solution (e.g., the minimum number of distinct checkmate moves), help guide others, and sometimes post hints. But there are no hard-and-fast rules; feel free to post comments as you please.
