Limestone on the top of Mt Everest [1]

Limestone is made on the bottom of the sea from fragments of fossil animal shells. At one time the world was covered in water. Then as upheavals, as volcanos exploded and as newly formed continents crashed into each other, parts of the sea bed became mountain tops. As different layers of the earth were exposed, different minerals became available. Through wind, rivers carrying water, and animals spreading their excrement, minerals were spread upon the earth. Eventually these minerals, the first 92 elements of the periodic table, became a part of the ocean.
Many parts of the earth’s soil contain these minerals. Our blood contains the same 92 minerals that the ocean does in a similar ratio. We shouldn’t be surprised as sea animals that lived in this environment eventually migrated to the land years ago to become land animals. We don’t know what all of these minerals do, but we are aware that sometimes one mineral won’t function in our body without another mineral. When we explore healthy people who live long lives, many times they have a diet rich in seafood. In our society, we are encouraged to eat salmon and other sea fish. The reason given is because of the omega ratio they contain which helps our cardio system. I wonder if the supply of all minerals might also contribute.
We do know that what minerals that are available in the soil for our food have an effect on our health. During WWII, the area of the US that had the most soldiers enlisting turned down for health reasons was in Southern Mo, an area known for poor soil. If you read the first chapter of my book, (www.dailykos.com/… ) you will note the experiments with hogs and their demeanor. We know that the absence of some minerals will cause emotion and other mental problems. including depression, think ‘comfort foods’. The overabundance of some minerals, think lead, will affect our mental ability. Although it is very hard to prove the necessity of all 92 minerals, the fact that our blood has these minerals and can only replace them through food and some pills causes me to think I want a diet that includes these minerals.
In most parts of the world, these minerals will be available in the soil. Except we have been draining them from our soil for centuries and they are lacking in many soils. Few farmers add more than two or three minerals. Eating sea fish or seaweed is a good way to get these minerals in the right ratio. Except, our oceans are so polluted that is hard to, if not impossible, to get untainted seafood.
“Linus Pauling, the only person so far to win two unshared Nobel prizes, once pointed out that you can trace every illness, every disease and every infection to some mineral deficiency. Any mineral deficiency always means there are even more mineral deficiencies waiting in the wings. It is equally true that most of the major degenerative diseases have been developed in test animals by withholding or manipulating critical trace minerals.
These soil minerals have been scoured from agricultural sites over the last two centuries just as surely as if they had been vacuumed out of a family room carpet. “

I encourage you to go to this article and see many results of mineral deficiency.
Because I want to make sure I have all 92 minerals; because I restrict my seafood intake because of fear of pollution; because some soil is deficient and most good soil has been stripped of minerals; because current farming practices emphasis quantity instead of quality, I take steps to supplement my mineral intake. From the depts of the oceans far away near the continent of Australia is probably some of the most pristine water anywhere in the world. From the depths of the ocean there, water is drawn and evaporated. The result is a mixture of sea minerals that mimic the minerals ratio in my blood. Although the recommended dosage is two pills daily, I only take 3 or 4 a week. I figure I get most of my minerals from organic and pastured raised food. In order not to overdose, a common occurrence with multi vitamins, I just try to make sure I have a little of every mineral.
I spent the first three chapters of my book on minerals because they are an unexplored aspect of our diet. Regardless of their importance, few are even aware of them. Share this article and keep tuned for more to come.
