Well, He’s Not Perfect, He’s Just Joking [1]

This past weekend, I took a media blackout to reset, rethink and regenerate. I screamed and yelled at the bad calls, great catches, and stunning runs during the many football games. I succeeded in tuning out the Sunday morning shows and the all-day bombardment of corporate media. I will admit I was girding my loins for the slow-speed car following Trump going to testify in court this morning. Journalists are getting writer’s cramps after Mr. Trump leaves the stand and courthouse to spin his testimony. Nothing new is ever learned: the prosecutor is a racist [against white people], the judges are Trump haters, their spouses are complicit, and WITCH HUNT!
Lo and behold…!
I awoke this morning to the news that Donald Trump once again lied and has decided (wisely) not to testify—on his own behalf, in the compensation portion of his New York financial fraud trial. Trump’s lead attorney, Alina Habba, said Mr. Trump ignored her initial advice not to testify, saying, “President Trump does not cower.” Ms. Habba failed to realize that lying is the most insidious form of cowardice. What made her believe she was immune to his lies and manipulation astounds even the most casual follower of justice and politics. Her experience led me to ponder: why are Republicans so accepting of a liar? Unfortunately, it is not just the acceptance and excusing of a liar; it is identifying with a man who hates the same people they hate.
Unlike the widespread belief that the ostrich buries its head in the sand to hide, they are starting a nest to lay its eggs. The Republican party, writ large, has nested in the lies of Trump for so long it has become a burial place for rationality. There are standard lines for Republican hierarchy and another for their voters to use to avoid the truth like a plague. When confronted about the latest Trump promise of fascism or blatant xenophobia or racism, they say I did not see his social media posts or watch his rallies or speeches. The idea that a GOP politician would not follow the leader of the party is fallacious at best and malpractice at worst. Their constituents, unbothered by politics and consumed with hate, when Trump says “fine people on both sides” or advocates for the “termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those in the Constitution” to return him to power, say he is not perfect, or he is just joking. The blind allegiance to Donald Trump by his followers is nothing short of cultism. Ignoring his promises of authoritarianism, the recruitment of people like Kash Patel, who said on former Trump aide Steve Bannon’s podcast:
“We will go out and find the conspirators, not just in the government, but in the media, yes, we’re going to come after the people in the media, who lied about American citizens, who helped Joe Biden rig the elections, we’re going to come after you,” Patel went on to say, “Whether it’s criminally or civilly, we’ll figure that out, but yeah, we’re putting you all on notice.”
In fear of violating Godwin’s Law, it cannot be overstated that one of Hitler’s first moves was to do away with any opposition press. Once the people’s right to be informed fell, so did societal decency. Conservatives in America have warned for decades that taking away their guns would lead to a tyrannical government. They need to look within; the caller is in the house.
