MSNBC host Chris Hayes did a masterful job of showing just how to do that in a 15-minute segment of his show “All In” on Thursday night titled: “The Joe Biden Success Story: The Truth & Spin About the American Economic Recovery.” Over the weekend, MSNBC’s website published a adapted excerpt of the segment written by Hayes.
It’s a message that’s relevant today as we face a tough election fight next year that could determine our democracy. We need to accentuate the positive about President Joe Biden’s economic record, while eliminating all the negative messaging spewed forth by Fox News and other right-wing media outlets.
“You got to ac-cent-tchu-ate the positive E-lim-i-nate the negative And latch on to the affirmative Don't mess with mister inbetween.”
There’s an often-covered 1944 song “Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive,” with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by Johnny Mercer, which shares the following message:
Hayes points out that we are in a “weird environment” where there’s a lot of data showing that the U.S. economy is doing really well—in fact better than in European countries like Britain, Germany, and France—yet people genuinely feel very bad about the economy. Biden “is not getting the praise he deserves,” Hayes said. Hayes wrote:
The story of the Biden presidency so far has been this series of metaphorical meteors hitting the Earth, unexpected and in many cases unprecedented crises that the White House had to attend to. Each one has caused huge cycles of enormous, around-the-clock panic across the media. In every case, the Biden administration attempted to do something about the problem. In many cases, they saw real, tangible success. They quietly did their job, then moved on to the next crisis. That is not the message getting through on Fox News. No, the message on Fox is that the entire economy is going to collapse any minute now, and a recession is imminent.
Hayes proceeded to give a reality check on the lies and distortions that Fox News has been offering its viewers. Fox praises former President Donald Trump for the great economy from 2017-19, but conveniently ignores the 2020 economic disaster during the COVID-19 pandemic when Trump “oversaw the biggest job loss in American history, along with mass death and abject disaster.”
Hayes wrote:
The Biden presidency inherited a succession of unprecedented crises. These crises affected the entire world and produced much worse economic outcomes in peer countries: We had a once-in-a-century pandemic that killed millions of people and shut down entire industries. As president, you get credit for things when things are good, and you get blamed when things are bad, even when they are out of your control.
And then Hayes provides a closer look at what Americans have been hearing about the economy over the past three years from Fox. When labor shortages were reported, Fox pushed the notion that Americans didn’t want to work in part because they were getting all this money from the federal government. The Biden administration continued the economic stimulus from the Trump pandemic response and then when the vaccines became available pushed its vaccination campaign. The result was that people started feeling more comfortable going to work in person.
