Lucky's Rescue Day [1]

My wife and I park at the restaurant and are about to enter when we spot the dog on the far side of the busy rural road. A black dog with touches of white, and the left hind leg dangling.
Traffic hurtling past so I want to get across quickly, but have to wait for seven cars. I count them.
Speak gently… offer the back of your hand. He/she sniffs. (Later I realise it’s him.) Very gently stroke the neck while speaking gently. He’s starving, I can see his ribs sticking out.
On the second attempt, I get a string halter on him. Taking a chance I lift him into the car. He weighs a lot less than he should. We tell the restaurant we’ll be back later. We stop at the OxxO and buy pouch food, which he gobbles from my hand, while my wife drives the 20Km to our vet.
He’s very well behaved at the vet. Doesn’t complain at the blood sample. Five minutes later we have the result: probable heartworm, from tick bites. He has fleas as well as ticks, so we book him in for everything, he’s in overnight.
The XRay comes back. It’s horribly clear. The bone is snapped in two and displaced and has begun to fuse to a lower position now. So far the fees have been a couple of hundred dollars worth. But now we’re looking at an extra $1200 for the orthopedic surgery. They’ll put a plate in.
We hope he gets along with our other dog, ‘cos we’ve decided that one way or another we’ll pay to make him well again. The look on his face when I picked him up is enough. So that’s why my wife called him Lucky. Because it was his lucky day.
