Why US drivers may be thinking about EVs all wrong

While electric vehicle sales in the United States are rising, demand has slowed. According to a July 2023 Pew Research Center survey, half of Americans say they're unlikely to consider an EV, and 13% are sure they don't want one. In fact, according to the report, the share of the public interested in purchasing an EV is down 4% from May 2022.

Analysts point to affordability issues and lack of confidence in charging infrastructure as the main drivers, but car manufacturers also face another challenge to convince consumers to ditch the combustion engine: US drivers don't believe a new electric auto could be a wholesale replacement for their current car.

It's not that Americans are opposed to EVs, per se – it's rather that an overwhelming swath of consumers want EVs that can take them as far on a single charge as they can get on a tank of gas. And in a country where the top-selling vehicles are pickup trucks and large SUVs, buyers are less likely to downsize to go electric.

House votes to block Biden EV rule

The House on Wednesday voted in favor of blocking a Biden administration rule that’s expected to shift car sales in the U.S. significantly toward electric vehicles.

The vote was 221-197.

The rule in question could move car sales as far as to reach two-thirds electric by 2032.

The bill approved by House Republicans on Wednesday would also bar the Environmental Protection Agency from pursuing any rules that result in limited availability of gas-powered cars.

Biden’s Latest China Crackdown Puts His EV Ambitions At Risk

The Biden administration rolled out rules for electric vehicle tax credits on Friday that clamp down on Chinese imports — but threaten to slow the U.S. transition away from fossil fuels by slashing the number of cars that qualify.

The long-awaited guidance on accessing the tax credits is emblematic of the minefield the Biden administration has had to navigate as it seeks to advance its ambitious climate agenda while at the same time breaking Chinese dominance of the batteries and critical minerals needed to fuel the transition to EVs.

The rules disqualify a vehicle from receiving the credit if even one of its suppliers has loose ties to Beijing, such as producing parts in China or having as little as 25 percent of board seats controlled by China. In certain instances, even an American supplier merely relying on licensed Chinese technology could be barred from the credit under the new rules.
