Yuval Abraham of +972 Magazine in collaboration with Local Call has written an eye-opening article on the two factors which have contributed to the unprecedented level of civilian death and injury in Israel’s war on Gaza: The removal of constraints on IDF operations by the Defense Ministry and the use of the Habsora (the Gospel) Artificial Intelligence System. When Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari stated that the current operation called “Iron Swords” is designed for “damage and not accuracy,” he was not kidding. Abraham writes that “Habsora generates targets almost automatically at a rate that far exceeds what was previously possible. This AI system, as described by a former intelligence officer, essentially facilitates a “mass assassination factory.”
The problem for humanitarians is that the system has resulted in the targeting of apartment residences and other civilian targets and safe spaces (called power targets by the Army ) in which no Hamas operatives may reside, only innocent civilians. It has violated the legal principle on the proportionate use of lethal force in International Humanitarian Law designed to protect civilians.
