Malik Zulu Shabbaz, the one-time leader of the New Black Panther Party, current leader of the current National President of Black Lawyers for Justice, and Detroit community activist, has been hospitalized again after suffering from undiagnosed medical issues. He had previously suffered a massive heart attack this June, as he was preparing to accept the Presidential Lifetime Achievement, which is awarded by the President for people who have completed over 4,000 hours of community service. It is the highest level of the President's Volunteer Service Award. Shabazz’s heart attack led to months of rehabilitation and respiratory problems. He remains in a stable condition.
Hitting the Streets in the Name of Love and Justice
Shabazz had, over the last 39 years, worked as a community organizer, forming citizen patrols such as the Detroit 300 in 2010, working with victim advocates to grow awareness about unsolved crimes and missing persons, protesting the existence of drug houses, pointing the poor to places where they could get food and clothing, fighting voter suppression and apathy, and combatting businesses that sold defective products or treated their clientele poorly. According to the police, without Shabazz’ aid, they would not have been able to solve the murder of Denez Dupree, a 43 year old panhandler who was executed in 2021. Shabazz organized marches in the west side to raise awareness about her murder, and that led to the tip that resulted in the case being solved. Christopher Williams was arrested and convicted, pleading guilty to second-degree murder. He is currently serving a 15-to-30 year prison service. Shabazz said of the arrest , "We credit God. Whenever the people hit the street in the name of love and justice, in the name of stopping the violence and having a safe environment for our women, children and elders, we're doing God's work."
