Photo Diary: Weedon Island, St Pete FL [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

This little island just offshore from St Petersburg FL packs a lot of history. It is an important archaeological site, being the original find of the Weeden Island (sic) Culture. It was a hub for an early version of Eastern Airlines, and during the Second World War it was a training base for US fighter pilots. Today it is a wildlife preserve, with several miles of pathways and boardwalks.

Some photos from a visit.

For those who don't know, I live in a converted campervan and travel around the country, posting photo diaries of places that I visit. I am currently wintering in Florida.

This small museum, open only on weekends, has exhibits about the Weeden Island Culture

All that remains of the former airport terminal is part of the bathroom wall

Most of the park consists of boardwalks through the mangrove swamp
