Today on Morning Joe, Peter Wehner was trying to explain what is going on with the Republican Party by quoting David Hume. Unfortunately, he got it completely backwards, saying that “passions are a slave to reason.” Well, that may be the way things are on the planet Vulcan, but don’t look for it here on Earth. What David Hume actually said in A Treatise of Human Nature was the following:

We speak not strictly and philosophically when we talk of the combat of passion and of reason. Reason is, and ought only to be the slave of the passions, and can never pretend to any other office than to serve and obey them.

Furthermore, even when we have before us Hume’s original quotation, it does not explain what is going on today with Donald Trump and the MAGA crowd, nor would Hume have thought it could do so. Hume’s view of the matter applies as much to the most thoughtful and judicious among us as to the mob that attacked the Capitol on January 6.
