The Carillon Historical Park in Dayton, Ohio is a 65-acre complex filled with dozens of museum buildings which showcase the region’s industrial innovations, transportation achievements, and contributions to world progress.
Gristmill
During the nineteenth century, water-powered mills for grinding corn and wheat into flour were common. By 1823, there were 50 gristmills along the Miami River. According to the display:
“Overshot wheels like this one used the weight and momentum of falling water to generate the power needed to run the millworks.”
According to another sign:
“In pioneer villages, mills were among the first structures to be built. Water-powered mills ground flour, cracked corn and sawed lumber. An abundant water supply was a boon to the small community of Dayton.”

Corliss Engine Building
The steam-powered Corliss Engine generated electricity from 1902 until 1948 for the National Cash Register’s 27 factory buildings. The buildings were also heated with the engine’s exhaust steam. According to the display:
“George H. Corliss’ engines contained innovations that greatly improved the efficiency of the steam engine by reducing the waste of steam power and creating a steady flow of electrical power.”
