Proper Etiquette to Stay Connected During Thanksgiving Dinner (2024) [1]

Before dinner, install your ear buds so you can receive calls without disturbing your dinner partners. If you have to respond to a call, it is proper to hold your dinner napkin in front of your mouth while you communicate, softly of course, into the ear bud mic. It is VERY impolite to carry on a very long and loud conversation with your phone during dinner -- unless the party on the other end of the line is more important or more interesting than your dinner companions. If you do need or would rather continue that phone conversation at length, it is considered polite to explain that choice to your dinner companions by making the following comment: 'Excuse me for taking this call but my interlocutor is more important and more interesting than you are, I hope you wont be offended'. This always works. in my family we avoid these difficulties at dinner by taking brief 15 minute phone breaks every 15 minutes. Works like a charm. (Election Year dinner hint:) We avoid politics and thus political arguments by inviting only those people who already agree with us so there is no need to talk politics).
