Must be reading Kitchen Table Kibitzing.

Phones

I was slow to adopt cellphone technology. It was at a Netroots that brillig showed me how cool it was, and I should get one. Costco offered one free! All I had to do was sign up for a Verizon account for a year. At the end of the year I had paid $600 and had used it to take a few photos. Lethargy kept me from dealing with this for all too long, but finally at the urging of my daughter I got an inexpensive iPhone and a super cheap yearly plan.

This world now assumes everyone has a cellphone, sometimes to ridiculous extents. I remember an event for which the only way to enter was using a phone. Though I had mine, I said said I don’t own one. This caused a flurry of consternation and disbelief, and it was only through a managerial intervention that we could enter.

The main problem I have with it is finding my phone. And thus I virtually never have it with me. I can see the value of an emergency phone, but I lived for a long time without. I have checked Daily Kos on my phone occasionally, but…..what are all those other people doing?

Am I just being a curmudgeon, or is it the fact that my eyesight is getting worse and a cellphone screen is getting more and more difficult to see?

How important is your phone? How often do you use it? What’s the most important use? Do you ever leave home without it? Could you deal with losing it?
