I don’t hate the holiday season like I used to when I was younger.

The holiday season— from Thanksgiving through Christmas, and ending with New Year’s Day— can be full of so many saccharine platitudes and clichés from family-get togethers to the giving of thanks and material gifts to New Year’s Eve among throngs of people willing to pay for unreasonably high cover charges to bars and clubs with overpriced drinks that I was (and still can be) simply over it.

I don’t hate the holiday season anymore. I am ambivalent to it, though.

For the most part, while I’ve been capable of spending the holiday season, in part, with close and extended family, I haven’t always felt welcomed. Part of that is my fault and part of it is the family’s fault. I will say that the more time passes, the more welcomed I feel by most of the family. Even loved.

I almost always have been available for work on holidays and I do like the little bit of extra money that I receive when I work on holidays. Plus, I am around other people working and, more often than not, there is some acknowledgement of whatever holiday it happens to be.

And when that’s over with, I can always choose to be among people that, for the most part, I genuinely like.

And some of those people even happen to be family, sometimes.

So...I spent Thanksgiving Day with “the family that I’ve chosen.” I ate a lot...but not too much (and not all of the foods that I enjoy the most, especially desserts). I worked. I called Mom and wished her a Happy Thanksgiving. I’m glad that I did because she had a cold that prevented her from going to a big family gathering at my niece’s house.

Watched a bit of football. Watching more today and really anxious about watching The Game tomorrow.

Thus far, the holiday season is going OK. I am not overwhelmed with emotions for any reason, to this point.

I’m feeling OK, as I should be. But ask me again at about 3:00 pm tomorrow afternoon. But I’ll get over it.

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. From ChrisRodda's diary, Shockwave started a great thread. CyberMindGrrl hit one point, and mabon polished that point.
