It’s exhausting to fight the same battles over & over, having to defend rights that we thought were secure a long time ago. But here we are again.

But first, a word from our sponsor!

Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10 pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30 pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!

First, some good news: y’all may have seen stories about a ridiculous law in Mufreesboro, Tennessee, that included “homosexuality” as a a category of “public indecency,” which could include anything from holding hands in public to having books with LGBTQ+ content in public libraries. After an ACLU lawsuit and widespread public ridicule, the reference to homosexuality has now been removed from the law.

Now the bad news: in Florida, source of so many bad ideas lately, a legislator has proposed a bill expanding “Don’t Say Gay” to all governments agencies and any company that does business with them. And it would ban any nonprofit from mandating any "training, instruction, or other activity on sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression,” which would basically make it impossible for LGBTQ+ nonprofits to exist in the state.

In a rational world, the obvious first amendment violations would stop this bill in its tracks, and if it didn’t, the courts would laugh it out of existence. But this is Florida, so we’re going to have to do everything we can to keep it from passing. Because if it gets in front of a DeSantis-appointed judge, they’ll probably outlaw pronouns, and possibly adverbs and definite articles too.
