This should be illegal: just a work vent [1]

Discussion of labor rights has taken a backseat these days to Ukraine, Israel, and The Speaker of the Crazyhouse, but I’m sure it’ll come up again, so when it does, I want you all to remember this as the kind of thing we need to fight against:
My job has a two-week workweek. You work twelve-hour shifts and it’s on two days, off two days, on three days, off two days, on two days, off three days. So in that 14 days you’re actually only working seven of them, and then on the days you’re off there’s another shift that does the same thing but reversed. That is, unless you have mandatory overtime.
Yes, I said mandatory.
To help accommodate an influx of new clients (which the company took on even though we already can’t keep up with demand) and this being the busiest time of year, we’re on mandatory overtime.
So my fourteen days has looked like this:
Off for two days, on for three days, off for one day, on for three days, off for one day, and tomorrow I go back to do another on for three days.
I am working 108 hours in the span of twelve days.
Much of this could be avoided if the company would put in the money to properly fix their machines, and also if new hires were being properly trained so we had a full(er) crew.
This. Should. Be. Illegal. I work with machinery that can tear off your hands if used wrong. (And that isn’t because it’s not working, that’s because it’s hydraulic and massive.) I’m being asked to run it while so exhausted I’m basically living off caffeine. Today was my one day off and I slept for fifteen hours. (And I’m still tired.) I’ve got a headache from lack of food and hydration from the megasleep. I’m trying to recover from illness. And there are rumors December is going to be worse.
We need unions. And we need better labor laws. And we need them NOW.
