A Turkey on the Menu [1]

Whether you drove, took a train or plane, or bicycled to a relative’s home, many of us are spending the morning gathering the ingredients from the pantry to contribute our specialty to tomorrow’s Thanksgiving meal. Most of the talk will veer away from politics. Grandma’s homemade cranberry sauce and complaints about who dared put raisins in the potato salad will dominate conversations. Sure, Uncle Bubba will ask how much you spent for gas to get here because his eight-mile-to-the-gallon—2006—gas guzzler knocks a bit on regular, and Aunt Mary will talk about the price of eggs compared to last year while lamenting the 29 cents a dozen her Mom paid when she was a child. More and more men are participating (my secret is using amaretto instead of vanilla extract) in the meal prep, venturing beyond the couch and cracking open beers while placing a bet on the game with Cousin Willie.
The preteens will pout about still having to sit at the kids’ table ducking mashed potatoes and gravy, hoping they do not sit on something squishy little Alvin left behind in a chair. At some point, with all the efforts to avoid family squabbles and the entertaining teens making googly eyes at each other, someone will eventually bring up the name Trump. ALL BETS ARE OFF. For families of liberal thinkers, what Joe Biden has not accomplished is the game of choice. For the Trump-supporting conservatives, finding nicer euphemisms for fascism is the new Wordle (except Wordle is woke). Instead of savoring the flavor of the stuffed bird, the tryptophan nap will be offset by America’s latest fowl on the menu, Donald Trump.
President Biden started the annual festival of feast and football by pardoning two turkeys [Liberty and Bell]. The Washington Post , one of the so-called bastions of the liberal press, took the opportunity to lambaste the president for confusing Taylor Swift and Britney Spears as if it matters (yes, I said it). Mr. Biden praised the late Rosalynn Carter, the wife of former President Jimmy Carter, saying [she] “ walked her own path, inspiring the nation, the world along the way .” Despite the mocking Post piece by Travis Andrews, I am reminded of the decency of Joe Biden in moments like the White House pardoning ceremony. In contrast, Mr. Trump could not summon the courage or character to be sympathetic toward the Carter(s) the day after Mrs. Carter was admitted to hospice care—leading up to her eventual death, saying [Jimmy Carter] is “the happiest person anywhere in this country right now... because his administration looked brilliant compared to these clowns,” Trump said at the rally while criticizing President Joe Biden. In fairness, Mr. Trump issued a praiseworthy public statement upon her death. Still, its authenticity has been questioned because it was well-written with no grammar or spelling errors, as per his usual.
After the turkey carcass is picked clean, the leftover amaretto bottle is emptied, and someone wakes Uncle Bubba to tell him it is time to leave; take a little time to be thankful; after all, love conquers all.
